The Builder: Chuck Schlesinger

My love for woodworking started, as with many, in the woodshop class that was once required for every 7th grade male student in junior high. I loved to make things and wood gave me an accessible medium in which to create.

In high school woodworking took a backseat to playing sports and studying. After graduating from the University of California, Irvine with a degree in biology, I ended up applying to Dental school and eventually received my DDS from The Ohio State University College of Dentistry. In the early 2000s as a side interest I apprenticed and learned to build custom steel framed bicycles. For many years I built custom and spec models for clients all over the world. During this time I was a regular exhibitor at the North American Handmade Bicycle Show.

Eventually, my love of music, guitars in particular, brought me back to the allure of wood. It is not only a pleasure to work with, but its warmth, beauty and organic properties are a stark contrast to the sterility of steel. In 2018 I founded Sadilah Handmade Guitars and started building instruments in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

I strive to build instruments that not only perform at the highest level, but also are keepsakes to be passed along to the next generation. Instruments can be manufactured in many ways. I believe that only the human hand can create an instrument with a soul.

A handmade instrument brings with it a quality that automation can only mimic, the heart and soul of the craftsman can be felt in the way an instrument feels, sounds and performs. At Sadilah, every guitar is made by hand, one at a time.
